We headed straight to our hotel so they could store our luggage until check-in. The hotel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pensaoportuense.com\/default.aspx\">Pensao Residencial Portuense<\/a>, was just what I had hoped \u2013 a small privately owned hotel, humble but charming, and located right in the center of everything.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2721\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2721\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0808.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2721 \" style=\"margin-bottom: -10px; font-size: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0808.jpg\" alt=\"image 2.\" width=\"280\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0808.jpg 500w, https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0808-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio, facing the ocean.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sun had not yet risen, and after the polite doorman had taken care of our bags, we went for a stroll. After only a short walk we reached the ocean as Lisbon lays sprawled by the water .\u00a0A beautiful sunrise bathed the old architecture of this ancient city with golden rays, slowly sweeping its brilliant touch over the cold stone facades.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2726\" style=\"width: 169px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0885.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2726 \" style=\"margin-bottom: -10px; font-size: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0885.jpg\" alt=\"Image 3.\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0885.jpg 281w, https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0885-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Alfama and <\/b><b>Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge<\/b><b><\/b><br \/>\nWith such a beautiful city before us, we kept walking and taking in the scenery. We slowly made it up through the steep, winding streets of the old Moorish neighborhood, <span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Alfama. This part of Lisbon is run-down, yet charming, with antique relief sculpture and moldings adorning each building.\u00a0<\/span>Each fa\u00e7ade is completely tiled, and each balcony is framed by an intricate iron rail. The ancient ruin of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Castle_of_S%C3%A3o_Jorge\">Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge<\/a> is located at the top of the large hill of Alfama, overlooking the city below.\u00a0The first fortification on this location was built ca. 200 BC, and the latest structure was rebuilt by the Moors during the 10<sup>th<\/sup> century. The Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge is a must-see while staying in Lisbon.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2732\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a style=\"margin-top: 15px;\" href=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0914.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2732 \" style=\"margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: -10px; font-size: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/tpi.itbyus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0914.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0914\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have never visited such a large castle ruin before. The grounds are expansive, and you have access to anything you can reach and see. Be prepared to walk up and down steep stairs in this myriad of rooms, courtyards, towers, and walls. If you have weak knees, I suggest that you take a cab or a tram to the castle instead of walking. The castle also includes a museum, a souvenir shop and a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>The grounds are surrounded by beautiful gardens, and you will run into a large population of co-existing cats and peacocks, rather indifferent to the traffic of tourists. This medieval cathedral has survived many earthquakes since its first construction in 1147. While inside, it is worthwhile to invest in the few extra euros needed to enter the cloister, still undergoing excavations. The Cathedral has a unique blend of Roman, Arab, mediaeval and Gothic elements as a result of being renovated over time.<\/p>\n<p>Later additions in architecture and art is represented in Baroque, neoclassical and rococo styles.
